CHAPTER FIVE

Trembling, Josh pulled out of Aidan and got rid of the condom. He crawled out of the bed and stood up on shaking legs to go to the bathroom where he took a long good look at his face in the mirror. He couldn’t believe what had just happened. Aidan. He fucked Aidan. Even in his wilder dreams, he never thought this could happen. What now? What was he supposed to say? Or do? As much as he didn’t want to go back in the bedroom to face the other man, he knew he had to. He took a deep breath, turned from the mirror and walked back in the other room.

Aidan hadn’t moved. He was still laying on the bed, legs spread, eyes closed, and a contented smile on his lips. Josh stopped at the foot of the bed and looked at him, wondering how he was going to be able to talk to him. He reached his wrist to lightly brush his hand on the tattoo, the reminder of his shame, drawing some strength from the touch.

“Aidan?” He croaked. Christ, he sounded weak.

Aidan opened his eyes and his smile widened.

“Hey, babe. That was fantastic,” he said, stretching and yawning.

“Yes, yes it was. But we need to talk.”

Aidan looked at him with sleepy eyes. “Of course. Sure. But do we have to do it now? Can’t it wait tomorrow? You’ve exhausted me,” he added with a seductive smile.

Josh was tempted to drop it and come back in the bed to cuddle his lover. Instead, he went to pick up his briefs and put them on.

“I’m afraid not,” he said.

Aidan sighed and nodded. “Alright then,” he agreed. “What’s on your mind?”

“Er… Could you at least cover yourself?” Josh said looking away.

“Fine,” snapped Aidan, folding back the sheets over his naked body. “Better?”

“Yes, thank you,” answered Josh, sighing heavily. He didn’t know where to begin. What do you say to the man you learned to hate and love at the same time for so many years, and with whom you just had the most amazing sex?

“Aidan,” he began, “what just happened between us…” He raised both hands in defeat. “I don’t know why it happened. It makes no sense. No sense at all.”

Aidan blinked several times like he didn’t understand a word Josh was saying. And maybe he didn’t. Hell, Josh had a hard time understanding himself right now.

“Didn’t you enjoy it?” asked Aidan, puzzled.

“No! Yes! That’s not the point!”

“So what’s the point?”

Josh sighed and came to sit on the bed. “I don’t know. I just… I’m supposed to hate you, not fucking you.”

Aidan closed his eyes and Josh could see the hurt on his face.

“I’m sorry, it didn’t come out right,” he said grimly. “I’ve been hating you for years… for what you did to me. And now… now I don’t know what to think anymore.”

“No. No, you’re right,” Aidan offered. “I’m the one who should be apologizing. For what happened four years ago, and for what happened right now. You obviously aren’t ready to forgive me, and I pushed you too fast.” He reached out to take Josh’s hands in his and Josh let him. “Josh, I’m sorry. I was an asshole back then, I really was. But I changed. I know who I am now. I know what I want. And who I want. And who I want is you. And I should probably stop talking if the way you look at me is any indication…” he trailed.

Josh tried to keep his face emotionless as he looked at Aidan, but he obviously failed. Thousand thoughts were running in his head. But the most incredible one was the fact that Aidan actually wanted him. Did that mean that he wanted him for more than one night? And if he did, was he ready to have a relationship with Aidan when he wasn’t sure he could forgive him? Maybe he should think less and enjoy the moment? Nobody said that he had to be serious all the time. Maybe it was time for him to let it go, at least for now. When he finally realized what it meant, a slow smile appeared on his lips and his body relaxed.

“Well, you’re still an asshole,” he stated. “That’s why I feel so lucky,” he added, wiggling his eyebrows in a comic way.

~~~~~~
Aidan roared as he jumped on Josh and wrestled with him, laughing his heart out. “You little devil,” he panted while he smashed his lover on the bed, face on the mattress, and sat on his ass. As he maintained Josh by his wrists, he took a good look at them and frowned. Was it…? It looked like it.
“Josh?” he asked. “What is that thing on your wrist?”
Josh’s body tensed under him and Aidan immediately regretted his question. He slowly let him go and sat on the bed, waiting stoically for whatever was coming.
Josh turned on his side, hiding his tattoo from Aidan.
“It’s a stupid thing I did the day before I came to invite you on that dreadful day,” he mumbled looking at the tiny bedroom’s window. “For my excuse, I was young and naïve. I just kept it as a reminder to my shame.”
A veil of sadness appeared in Aidan’s eyes. He slowly bowed his head and sighed.
“I’m so sorry, Josh,” he murmured. “If I could undo what I’ve done to you, I’d do it in a blink. I just hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me someday.”
Josh looked thoughtfully at him. Aidan held his breath, dreading to see in his lover’s eyes something that would tell him there was no hope. After what just happened between them, he couldn’t imagine being happy if Josh never forgive him.
“Could you at least think about it?” He murmured.  He reached out and took Josh’s wrist in his hands and the other man let him reluctantly have it. He tenderly brushed a finger on the tattoo and wondered if Josh was ready to hear what he was about to say; but he couldn’t delay it anymore. He needed some hope right now.
“Maybe you can now keep it as a reminder of my love for you?” He finally whispered.
 Josh gasped and looked at him, withdrawing his wrist from Aidan’s gently grip.
“You… You love me?” he asked, letting himself drop down beside his lover on the bed.
Aidan took a deep breath and spoke very slowly. “I didn’t figure it out until now, when I realized that you could just walk away from me. I guess that’s why I needed so badly to apologize to you. I mean, I could have written you a letter, you know? Or give you a call. But I had to see you. I thought I was driven by the culpability, and I was, but obviously, there was more than that,” he confessed, lowering his head.
Josh looked totally stunned and Aiden wondered if he should have said what was in his heart so bluntly. Maybe the other man wasn’t ready to hear it. Damn, that was the second time that he rushed things. Would he ever learn?  He opened his mouth to apologize—again—, when Josh cut him short.
“I’ve loved you for many years,” Josh said. “Even if I would have denied it if you would have asked me just a few hours ago. And I’m happy to know that it’s not a one-sided love. But we need to go slow. This is all new to me; I’m used to hate you too and I need some time to get used to that idea. I want to be sure that my love for you is stronger than my resentment.” He looked in Aidan’s eyes. “How long were you planning to stay here?”
Aidan shrugged. “Nobody’s waiting for me, so I guess I can do pretty much what I want. You want me to stay here?” He asked, hope filling his eyes.
“I would love that,” Josh answered. “But as I said before, let’s take it slow. One step at a time. Do you have a place to stay?”
“Yeah. I rented a little cabin in the valley. I guess I was planning to stick around for some time from the beginning,” he grinned.
“Okay then. We will just follow the flow and see where it will bring us. Deal?” he asked, reaching out to take Aidan’s hand.
Aidan nodded and shook his lover’s hand to seal the deal. “Agreed.”  He reached out with his other hand and pulled Josh closer to him. “But I’d rather kiss you than shake your hand,” he murmured as his lips gently brushed Josh’s.
Josh smiled against his lips. “I like the way you’re thinking. And the night is young; maybe we could spend it doing something more interesting than talking…”
